, numerous singers are discovering the possibilities presented by combining their voices with others to create impressive walls of sound. Eventually we’re going to put out an original record, hopefully in 2014. So I think our writing styles in general have just gotten better.
And perhaps the biggest a capella group of the moment is Pentatonix. I think the show has just been an upward trajectory of learning who we are as artists. We’ve already presented a couple originals, and already they’re miles ahead of where the last ones were when we presented last year.
Pentatonix (the album, not the group itself) arrived on October 16th, with both regular and deluxe versions available from retailers like i Tunes.
In contrast to the group’s previous albums, which feature a majority of cover songs, almost all of the tracks on Pentatonix are original songs.
Maldonado: I think last year we saved writing the songs for the end of our album.

Rather than releasing an a cappella medley, they instead sing along to the karaoke tracks and act out the scenes in front of a white curtain at the Endless Noise studio (made to look like a cozy apartment) -- complete with a blonde wig, snow made out of paper cutouts and lots of tossed pillows and blankets.
Nonetheless, it is still impressive to see the Texan fivesome–consisting of Scott Hoying, Mitch Grassi, Avi Kaplan, Kirstie Maldonado, and Kevin Olusola–at the top of Billboard’s chart, ahead of well-known musical celebrities like Demi Lovato and The Weeknd.
We’ll discuss our favorite songs of the time or songs that we always really wanted to do as a group.
It was a bit difficult at first, because we had so many possibilities and options. It was just a matter of, can we arrange these songs for the group, will it sound good, are we going to have a good lead vocalist? What was involved in the songwriting process of the two originals, “Show You How to Love” and “The Baddest Girl”?
We use a lot of it in general and when we are writing music.
It’s a five-note scale and we have five members, so we thought it was pretty appropriate. For example, are harmony or rhythm parts assigned to specific people or are the duties evenly distributed? I would say that Kevin and Avi are the rhythm section and the rest of us are the vocalists. I actually really do like doing rhythms, but it rarely happens because I can’t get those low ends that Avi can usually get.
